MEDICAL –SURGICAL NURSING PROGRAMMES
The Bachelor of Science in nursing being offered in department of Medical-Surgical in school of nursing at Mount Kenya University is an integrated programme to prepare a graduate with capacity  to  provide holistic nursing care  in health care system,  provision of  leadership in  nursing practice, nursing education and  nursing research.
The graduates in the various nursing programmes will be able to utilize skills based on knowledge derived from theory, practice, and evidence based on research and in relation to emerging health needs of a changing society. They will be capable of functioning effectively in a variety of teaching institutions and health care settings, to offer promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services to the clients/ patients. The graduates will be able to function independently and interdependently within the multidisciplinary health care team.
The programme offered in this department has intensive training in theory and clinical practice.

RATIONALE OF PROGRAMME
Providing training of nurses at Masters and Bachelors degree level is one way of raising the standards of health care delivery to Kenyans since nurses are the backbone of health service delivery.
It is envisaged that the graduates will apply critical thinking in the process and come up with practical solutions to solve the various patient’s/client’s health problems and needs. The improvement in the services will be achieved through integration of the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired.
The programmes have been designed to recognize that its graduands will have a strong clinical, biomedical and community health knowledge base in order to provide quality health care that will integrate curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative health care.
The professional practice of Nursing is regulated by an Act of parliament (Cap.257 of the laws of Kenya). This ensures that high standards are maintained during training and practice while observing professional ethics of conduct.

Course duration
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Programme takes FOUR years (12 trimesters) for direct entry intake and 2.5 years (8 trimesters) for BScN upgrading/ distance learning.

Minimum entry requirements for BScN direct entry
Kenya Certificate of Secondary education(KCSE) or its equivalent with an aggregate of C+(plus) and also C+ (plus) in each of the following requisite subjects:

  1. English
  2. Mathematics/ Physics
  3. Chemistry
  4. Biology

Minimum entry requirements for BScN- Upgrading group

  1. Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution
  2. KCSE mean grade C plain or Division 3
  3. A valid practice license from nursing council of Kenya
  4. Two years work experience after graduation as a registered nurse
